How to install DLG
This utility will install DLG onto your
system.
DLG consists of several small modules
that must be copied into various
directories on your hard drive.
This install utility will make all of the
proper directories for you, and copy all
of the modules and files that DLG needs
into them. Once the installation process
is complete, a special startup file will
be placed on your hard drive so that you
can start DLG up properly.
To start the installation process, press
the button labled INSTALL that you see
below.
The next screen that you will see will
have blank fields that you need to fill in
with information about where you would
like the DLG files installed. DLG
has five main sections, each of which
require a certain amount of drive space.
If you have multiple partitions on your
hard drive, or if you have multiple hard
drives installed in your system, here is
some information for you to consider as
you decide where to install DLG:
DLG: This contains all of the programs and
utilities that comprise the DLG system.
This volume will require approximately 1.3
Megs of drive space.
MSG: This will contain all of the message
areas for your DLG system. Count on
this taking up 100K of drive space or so
per message area that you plan to have.
FILE: This will contain all of the file
descriptions for each of your file areas,
and will often contain the files
themselves. Depending on how large a
system you want to create, you will need a
variable amount of drive space for this.
USER: This will contain all of the data on
your users. This will require a moderate
amount of drive space - approximately 1K
per user.
DLGConfig: This contains various batch,
configuration, and text files. This
requires about 300K of drive space.
If you only have one partition, simply
type a path name into the requester that
says "Install All Of DLG To:", or press
the PATH button at the end of the
requester to choose a path with your mouse
from a file requester.
If you have multiple hard drives or
partitions, you may want to individually
select alternate paths for each section of
DLG. These will act to override the
setting in the "Install All Of DLG To:"
path requester. If you leave an alternate
path requester blank, the install program
will install that section to the same path
that is entered the "Install All Of DLG
To:" requester. If you have not properly
filled out the requesters, the install
program will refuse to proceed.
If you press the PATH button at the end of
any of the path requesters, a special file
requestor appears, which is broken up into
three areas. The first area will list all
of the available DEVICES on your system.
All hard drives, partitions, and floppy
drives will be listed in this area.
The second area lists all ASSIGNS on your
system. You can pick either an ASSIGN or a
DEVICE - this choice will form the basis
for the "path" .
When you pick either an ASSIGN or a
DEVICE, all of the DIRECTORIES that can be
found at that location are listed in a
third area on the selection screen. If you
wish to place DIALOG into a certain
directory and/or subdirectory, you can
choose in this area.
To choose a DEVICE, ASSIGN, or DIRECTORY,
use your mouse pointer to "double-click"
on the desired choices in the lists that
you see. As you make choices, you can see
the "path" being assembled in the text bar
at the top of the screen.
If you have selected a directory, and
change your mind, you can use the PARENT
button to "back-out" of the directories,
one level at a time.
Once you have made your choices, press the
OK button to continue.
Once you have specified all of the paths
that you wish to, press the OK button to
continue the installation.
You will be asked to enter your name, and
a password to use on your system. The
installation program will automatically
create a user account for you using this
information.
Next, you will be asked to indicate how
many ports that you wish to have
automatically installed. DLG defaults
to a minimum of two ports - one for your
local sessions at your keyboard, and one
for remote sessions through your serial
port. If you are planning on running
additional phone lines to your DLG
system, you should indicate these here. If
you enter a number less than 2, DLG
will still install the minimum two ports.
The install utility will display a message
window. Choose either the ABORT button to
abort the installation, or the PROCEED
button to begin installing DLG onto
your system.
As files are installed, various messages
will appear in the message window, keeping
you informed of the installation progress.
Once the installation is complete, please
read the manual on how to proceed.
